Felix Mendelssohn Elijah
This is going to be quite epic. I believe it will be live streamed, and there will be a playback feature if want to watch another time. I’m singing in the larger choir but also featured in a solo quartet, octet, and solo quartet with choral accompaniment. The Oratorio is a large scale masterwork which premiered in England in 1846, and Mendelssohn is a very interesting composer because his style rather seamlessly blends the established conventions of his classical period predecessors with the undeniable romantic textures known to the 19th century, that we hear in Wagner, Brahms, The French, etc. Still, Mendelssohn was praised for not indulging too much in the en vogue schmalziness of his contemporaries, and we find refreshing vignets of Bach-imbued contrapuntal figures in his music.
